How Nurse Focus approaches AI companion laws

Maren is an AI companion, and we say so plainly rather than in the fine print. A one-line notice sits in the chat header the whole time you are talking, and a fuller disclosure card appears at the start of your first conversation, again if a week or more has passed since your last one, and again every three hours if you stay in one long conversation. If you ask Maren whether she is a person, she tells you she is an AI companion before anything else. Companion chatbots may not be suitable for some minors; Nurse Focus is for adults 18 and older and asks you to confirm this before your first conversation.

Every message is checked on our server across four levels, from ordinary conversation up to language about immediate danger. At the lower levels Maren stays in the conversation and works with what you said. At the top level she stops reflecting and points you to 988 and Crisis Text Line.

What gets recorded is an anonymous tick: the tier reached, a timestamp, whether the crisis banner was shown or the thread was paused, and the two-letter US state the request came from. No name, no account id, no IP address, and none of your words. Nothing is reported to any person, employer, or licensing body. How safety works walks through each level.

Nurse Focus is for adults 18 and older who work in healthcare. You are asked to confirm your age before your first conversation, and the app is not designed, marketed, or offered to minors. If you are under 18, please do not use it.

No advertising is shown during a conversation, and there is no ad or tracking pixel anywhere in the app. We never sell or share health information, and your conversations are never used to train any AI model, ours or anyone else's.

Hospitals, health systems, unions, and other organizations can sponsor access codes for their teams, but they receive zero data about individuals: no roster, no names, no usage times, no message counts, and no transcripts. Your employer never knows who uses Nurse Focus, when, or what is said. There is no organizational dashboard, because there is nothing stored to put in one.

Maren is not a therapist, counselor, clinician, or any other licensed professional, and a conversation with her is not therapy, counseling, medical advice, or crisis care. She does not diagnose, does not prescribe, and does not chart. She is a companion for the minutes between shifts.

Nurse Focus is designed to meet the requirements of state laws governing AI companions and mental-health chatbots, including those in California, New York, Oregon, Washington, and Tennessee. This page describes current practice and is not legal advice.

Conversations are not currently offered in Illinois, Nevada, or Utah. Those states' AI and mental-health laws either restrict non-clinical companions or require filings we have chosen not to make. Crisis and peer-support resources remain available there.
